"Careful collaboration with the building team was required to reinstate period features, restore the Victorian beauty to its early glory and deliver the contemporary addition at the rear."
Sarah Bryant, Bryant Alsop Architects
Surrey House is a Victorian terrace in inner Melbourne that underwent significant structural reworking to convert a dark, disjointed layout into a functional and welcoming home. Built on a narrow site with strict heritage constraints, the project required careful coordination of trades and a high level of craftsmanship to preserve the original façade and Victorian detailing while delivering modern upgrades.

In close collaboration with architect Bryant Alsop, we reinstated key period features—decorative plasterwork, staircase and balustrade, and tessellated tiling—while constructing a two-storey rear addition comprising a new kitchen, living area, and four bedrooms. A steel-framed bay window and lift were expertly accommodated, along with a custom-built wine cabinet integrated beneath the stair. Premium finishes, efficient spatial planning, and disciplined site management brought the client’s vision to life: a refined home built for entertaining and everyday living.
